How To Choose Eye Insurance Plans – Vision Insurance Plan

Dental and vision insurance

Insurance is extremely common in today’s world – almost everyone will have insurance of some sort; most will have multiple policies protecting themselves and their assets against various events. One type that tends to be misunderstood and underutilized is vision insurance, which offers a range of benefits relating to one’s eyesight, including cover for visits to eye specialists and related costs.

The following will highlight what vision insurance is, and provide general information on why having this type of coverage can be advantageous.

A definition

Vision insurance is a specialist type of cover, and is designed to provide for expenses relating to eye care and health. Similar to health insurance, a vision policy will cover office visits and services rendered by eye doctors, both general eye health practitioners and specialist optometrists (up to a certain level based on you’re the provider and plan selected). As with other policies, the insured will pay a monthly or annual premium in addition to a set deductible or excess amount every time a claim for reimbursement of specific eye-related services and costs is made.

Most plans provide for an eye exam per year as well as lenses and frames for glasses or a set of contacts. Some plans can be set up with more coverage and a series of co payments. Coverage of getting glasses usually encompasses the following:

A common misconception is vision insurance only covers an individual’s annual eye exam coverage and any unexpected eye related conditions. However, depending on the provider and policy selected, there may be many other inclusions and benefits. Although each policy will be different, most include coverage for a wide array of eye doctors such as optometrists, ophthalmologists and others in the vision arena. Policies may also cover a variety of eye-related needs such as eye exams, consultation for eye problems and the need for glasses and/or contact lenses. By having a policy in place, you are in effect making sure that you and your family members are covered whenever you need to be seen by an eye doctor for one reason or another.

Choosing the Right Vision Plan

If you think that a vision insurance company could have some benefits to offer, it is important that you find the right plan for your needs. Carefully review the benefits that are offered, what is covered, how often you can get an eye exam and how many pair of eye glasses or contact lenses you can get within a year or a six month period.

You can conduct an online search for vision insurance plans or even find a site that allows you to compare different companies by their benefits. You also want to make sure that you vision plan falls within your budget. It does you no good and you won’t save much if you go broke paying for the plan
